Hopeful for the Future

I know a lot of people are roasting the Call of Duty = Simpsons comparison, but I actually find it kind of hopeful. Think about it: The Simpsons had a rough patch (okay, a long one), but they’ve had a creative resurgence in recent years. Maybe CoD can too.
Every time the franchise looks like it’s about to burn out, something like Modern Warfare (2019) or Warzone comes along and revitalizes it. And that’s the thing—these long-running series don’t have to be stale. They just need the right people steering the ship.
Look at how The Simpsons embraced streaming, social commentary, and nostalgia. It stopped trying to be something new and instead leaned into what it does best with modern flair. Call of Duty could take a similar route: embrace single-player stories again, go back to tight map design, cut back on bloated monetization, and really innovate in smaller, meaningful ways.
The devs comparing it to The Simpsons might’ve been making a joke, but I think there’s a deeper truth: even long-running franchises can have second winds. All it takes is vision and risk. The audience is still there. The talent is still there. The potential hasn’t gone anywhere.
So maybe instead of saying “It’s just the same thing every year,” we should be asking, “What would it take to make it great again?” If The Simpsons can surprise us in season 34, Call of Duty can definitely deliver in its 20th installment.
